Exploring the HuffPost App

Last week we concluded our social media saga of HuffPost twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. This week, we’re shifting our focus to another equally important aspect of HuffPost news media: the app.

At a first glance the aesthetics of the app are quite visually appealing. The lead news story is set against a black background, which immediately draws your eye to the headline and intensifies the overall effect of the story.

When the user scrolls down, the app advertises the rest of HuffPost’s leading news stories against a white background, followed by their videos, blogposts, etc. The ads on the app were surprisingly minimal and non-abrasive as well, with only the occasional pop-up that the user can simply scroll past.

So, while the overall aesthetics of the app were appealing, my opinion of the app grew even further when I began to explore its different features. One of my favorites being the Sections feature.

As we all know, HuffPost has no shortage of news categories and niches for their audience to explore. But, with the editing feature on the app, HuffPost allows the user to pick and choose which categories they want regular updates on and which they want to appear on their feed for the main page of the app. This gives HuffPost a way I think to readily offer their plethora of news categories to their consumers without overwhelming them with news that may not necessarily apply to them.

The HuffPost app also allows its users to choose which stories to get alerts on, if any, which is a nice way to engage the users.

Overall, I actually liked the HuffPost app much more than the website. I think it does a better job of drawing the user’s attention to the stories that matter and it allows them to pick and choose which ones they want to see in the first place.
